BMA Blackwater engaged BRS to manage the HA compliance works at their Thermal Coal Processing Plant (TCP). The initial task was to provide a HA classification of the site which was completed by the BRS design team.
The TCP had been originally built and commissioned before Hazardous Area standards became prevalent, and as such was only designed to industry best practices of the time.
Beginning with an audit scheduled around planned shutdowns, the site was classified into various hazardous and non-hazardous zones. With this classification complete, and knowledge of the devices affected by this, BRS liaised with multiple hardware vendors to source suitably rated parts.
Based on the initial audit and the subsequent classification report, BRS provided a detailed execution package for all of the required upgrade works to make the plant compliant with AS/NZS 60079 Hazardous Area design standards. This package included detailed electrical and Hazardous Area classification drawings, breakdowns on what equipment needed to be changed and recommended hardware. This was presented in a format that could be easily broken up by the client into small work packs for installation contractors.
As the project moved into execution BRS provided advocacy for the site owner and the installer in completing the HA dossier requirements, as well as the inspection and testing works.
